I still remember the excitement I felt when I went to Friedman’s for breakfast for the first time last year. I was in New York for work and it was my first morning on my own—I was craving classic American pancakes! I was already armed with a list of gluten-free friendly restaurants from my NYC list (Friedman’s being one of them). I typed it into google maps and took a stroll. It was a beautiful sunny morning and as I walked through the door I sat at a table that was encased in a lovely little sun trap by the window. I was spoilt for choice with an extensive gluten-free menu but I was dedicated to the pancake mission—light, fluffy delicious and an excellent choice that satisfied my craving.
Once upon a time, the thought of eating alone at a restaurant would have filled me with fear, especially given my dietary restrictions. But solo travel has pushed me to dine out alone more often, and it’s now an experience I genuinely enjoy. I’ve found that researching restaurants and menus beforehand helps ease any nerves. If I’m feeling anxious, I’ll bring a book or my laptop to keep myself occupied—and it usually does the trick!

One thing I absolutely love about America is the culture of solo diners sitting at the bar. Strangely, we don’t really do this in the UK, but I love how sociable it feels. The friendly bar staff often keep you company, and you’ll usually find other solo diners nearby. Every Friedman’s I’ve visited has had a bar to sit at, and I’d highly recommend this as a great way to feel more comfortable dining alone, especially if it’s something you struggle with.
Since my first trip, Friedman’s has become my go-to spot for breakfast and brunch. Friedman’s is a chain and therefore conveniently located across manhattan near several main attractions. I’ve been to a few different ones now and every restaurant has a cozy yet vibrant vibe and perhaps most importantly; they’ve mastered the art of serving up gluten-free options that don’t compromise on taste, texture, or indulgence.

CHEESE BLINTZ
The first time I ordered this, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect—but it definitely wasn’t this! It turned out to be a delightful surprise; sweet, creamy, and reminiscent of a perfectly crafted crepe. Light, fluffy, and absolutely dreamy, it’s a treat that’s perfect for anyone with a serious sweet tooth.

VEGETABLE POTSTICKERS
These are truly one of my favorite snacks—think of them as a twist on a classic spring roll. Honestly, I’m a bit obsessed with them. They’re incredibly light, bursting with flavor, and paired with a sweet dipping sauce that complements them perfectly. A great little snack!

MAC & CHEESE BITES
Gluten-free breadcumb coated balls of mac and cheese deep fried to perfection! These were so tasty!
HAND CUT PASTRAMI ON RYE – mustard, herb fries

GRILLED CHEESE
This was simple yet satisfying and super comforting, I love that it comes with side of tomato soup—what a combo! This inspired me to make this at home because I loved it so much and it’s now one of my favourite comfort meals.

Conveniently located a stones throw from Friedmans at the Edison, The Tempo by Hilton New York Times Square is one of my favourite Hotels in NYC. Conveniently located right next to Times Square, it’s a fairly new addition to the NYC hotel scene and features floor to ceiling windows with views of time square (you can even book one of their balldrop rooms and watch the fireworks on NYE!).
