From Yiayia’s Sewing Machine to Lockdown Creativity: My Love Affair with Fashion Design and Vintage Clothing

“Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”

– Bill Cunningham

If there’s one thing that’s always been a constant in my life, it’s my love for fashion. But for me, fashion isn’t just about the latest trends or what’s on the runway but a deeply personal form of self-expression that has shaped who I am.

My Fashion Design Roots

It all started with my Yiayia, my Greek grandma, who was a sample machinist and dressmaker. Growing up, I spent countless hours watching her work, mesmerized by the way she’d sew stunning garments for high-end fashion houses. I was obsessed with her sewing machine—it felt like a magical portal, turning fabric into works of art.

As a toddler, I’d sit in her care while my parents were at work, my fascination with clothes taking root. This love was so intense that, much to my mum’s dismay, I once cut up her curtains to make dresses for my Barbie dolls. Let’s just say my first foray into design wasn’t met with applause, but the passion stuck.

By the time I’d hit my teenage years, the only subjects at school I really took an interest in were art and textiles. At the advice of my career’s councilor, I decided to take a fashion design national diploma at college rather than doing A Levels in sixth form. It was during my course I realised I preferred sewing as a hobby and decided to peruse my natural talent for fashion comms which lead to a BA Hons degree in Fashion Promotion at The University for the Creative Arts and eventually into the world of PR.

Sewing Through Lockdown: Creativity in Crisis

Fast forward to lockdown, when sewing became more than just a hobby—it became a lifeline. During my three month furlough and the uncertainty of the pandemic, sewing gave me something to focus on and pour my energy into. I used my skills to sew headbands, scrubs bags, and masks for NHS workers at local hospitals.

Creating these items felt like a small way to give back during such a difficult time, and it reminded me how rewarding it is to make something with your own hands.

I also channeled my creativity into reworking vintage and retro clothing. I launched an online store where I transformed sweatshirts and jerseys into cropped jumpers and festival co-ords. Repurposing old pieces into something new and stylish became my niche, and it tied into my love for sustainable fashion.

Sustainability and Reworking Vintage Fashion

Reworking vintage pieces doesn’t just save money—it breathes new life into forgotten garments while reducing waste. During lockdown, I realized how important sustainability is in fashion. Turning a worn sweatshirt into a trendy cropped jumper or co-ord not only sparked joy but also reinforced my belief that fashion should be timeless and environmentally conscious.

My love for vintage and retro clothing also likely stems from childhood nostalgia inspired by cherished memories of 80s and 90s clothing that continue to captivate me today.

Why Fashion is My Ultimate Creative Outlet

For me, fashion has always been about more than just the clothes—it’s about telling a story. It’s a way to celebrate individuality. In a world that’s constantly changing, there’s something comforting about the timelessness of self-expression through what we wear.

Whether it’s sewing headbands, reworking vintage pieces, or simply picking out an outfit for the day, fashion will always be my way of staying connected to my roots and expressing myself to the world.
