Why Lisbon is a Great Gluten-Free Travel Destination
Lisbon is fast becoming one of Europe’s top destinations for gluten-free foodies. With a growing number of certified coeliac-friendly spots, 100% gluten-free bakeries, and a general awareness of dietary needs, you won’t be stuck eating plain salad here.
And don’t worry if your Portuguese is a little rusty – menus are often bilingual, and staff are used to accommodating allergies. Still, I always make sure I have the google translate app on my phone (just in case).
Where to Stay: The Best Gluten-Free Friendly Hotel in Lisbon
The Corinthia Hotel Lisbon
I stayed at The Corinthia Hotel and highly recommend it for coeliacs. The staff were incredibly attentive to dietary restrictions, and breakfast had plenty of safe, filling options including an entire gluten-free section. Bonus: the on-site spa is amazing, and their in-house bar is perfect for a pre-dinner cocktail. It’s 5 star luxury but on an affordable budget and you can read my full review here.
Tip: Always mention a special occasion along with your allergy when booking (it was my birthday and they upgraded me to a suite!). I actually had a lovely lady from concierge introduce herself to me on arrival before walking me through everything the hotel could do gluten free. She gave me her contact details so I could contact her with any questions. Service – above and beyond!

3-Day Gluten-Free Lisbon Itinerary (Perfect for Coeliacs)
Let’s break it down, day by day, bite by bite.
Day 1: Christmas Markets, Pastel Palaces & Gluten-Free Eats (Thursday)
- Check in to your hotel (the Corinthia is a dream).
- Lunch at Dispensa No.6, a fully gluten-free bakery near Mercado de Campo de Ourique. Their sandwiches and pastel de nata are unreal.
- Wander through Rossio Square – if you’re visiting during December there’s a Christmas Market here with a hot mulled wine 🍷 (but skip the snacks unless you confirm they’re GF).
- Pop into The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines. a whimsical, touristy shop worth a quick peek.
- Walk to Arco da Rua Augusta and along the seafront promenade for golden hour photos.
- Stop for a gluten-free beer at Baía do Peixe on Praça do Comércio.
- Dinner at Rice Me – gluten-free rice-based dishes with global flavour.
- Nightcap at The Corinthia bar, because five-star cocktails just hit different.
Day 2: Spa Morning, Tram 28 & Time Out Market Bites (Friday)
- 8:00 Breakfast at The Corinthia (request gluten-free items)
- 9:00–11:00 Spa time (get the 50-min massage at 10am—you deserve it)
- 15:00 Ride the iconic Tram 28 from Campo Ourique to Martim Moniz to take in the city’s hilltop views
- 16:00 Visit Time Out Market. It’s busy, but fun for people-watching and cocktails. Not so great for gluten free but there’s a restaurant called Honest Greens nearby if you’re hungry
- 16:30 Early dinner at Honest Greens, casual, clean, and labelled gluten-free items
- Evening Plans: Grab a GF pastel de nata at Bali do Cais
- Stroll down Pink Street Cocktails at Bacchanal
- Games and pool at Mini Golf Lisboa
- Ice cream at GROM (gluten-free cones available!)
- Grab a gluten-free McDonald’s burger and fries on the way back to your hotel (yes, it’s safe in Portugal and there’s lots of different burger options from Big Macs to cheeseburgers!)
Day 3: Brunching, Bookstores & Michelin-Star Moments (Saturday)
- 10:00 Brunch at Rice Me Deli (GF bakery & brunch spot). It’s next to Rice Me restaurant but a very different vibe. One of the best gluten free bakeries I’ve been to! You have to have the ham and cheese melt.
- 12:00 Take the tram or walk to Baixa-Chiado for vintage shopping, boutiques, and a visit to the world’s oldest operating bookstore (Livraria Bertrand!)
- 14:00 Back to hotel for a rest or order gluten-free room service (check menu or use a food delivery app like Uber Eats). At the Corinthia I ordered a truffle gluten-free pasta and it was sensational.
- Evening Plans: 18:00 Head to Chiado square, there’s a Christmas market here in December. There’s also lots of shops around here to visit and various things going on.
- 19:00 See a live Fado show at Chiado Concert Hall. Fado is traditional Portuguese folk music, well worth a watch, they’re incredibly talented.
- 20:00 Stroll through Green Street
- 21:00 Dinner at Downunder by Justin Jennings, a Michelin-starred restaurant offering an 8-course gluten-free tasting menu (book ahead and ask for the gluten-free adaptation!)
